Throughout Dragon Ball’s history, many villains have come and gone quickly.
But Frieza is a completely different case. Despite debuting decades ago, the Galactic Emperor remains one of Dragon Ball’s most iconic villains thanks to his cruelty, overwhelming power, and ability to come back stronger after every defeat.

But beyond his terrifying power, Frieza also sparks curiosity among Dragon Ball fans because of a very strange detail.
The entire Frieza clan seems to have only two members. In the whole Dragon Ball canon, the only confirmed members of this race are Frieza and his father, King Cold. This has puzzled many fans. How could a race with such incredible fighting talent, capable of ruling a galaxy, have almost no other members?
Many fans thought Cooler, Frieza’s brother, was part of the main storyline. But Cooler only appears in the movie Dragon Ball Z: Cooler’s Revenge, which is non-canon. Similarly, ancestors like Chilled or Frieza’s son Kuriza are not part of the official canon either. The real answer to this mystery comes from the series’ creator Akira Toriyama, and it shocked fans because it’s hard to believe.

In the Dragon Ball Daizenshuu guidebooks, Toriyama explained that Frieza is actually a mutant. Not only him, but even King Cold is a rare mutant with power far beyond his species. In other words, Frieza’s race isn’t the dominant warrior race fans imagined. They might just be an ordinary species in the universe, but King Cold was a powerful mutant. Then King Cold gave birth to Frieza, an even more terrifying variant. What shocked fans even more is the detail that the Frieza clan likely reproduces asexually. According to Toriyama’s explanation, Frieza was born directly from his father, with no mention of a mother or other clan members.
This setup immediately sparked debate among Dragon Ball fans. Many consider it one of Toriyama’s strangest twists, since most viewers assumed Frieza came from a mighty empire with a whole race of fierce warriors behind him. Still, over time, Frieza has proven he doesn’t need a whole clan to be special.

In Dragon Ball Super, Frieza keeps coming back with absurd but captivating power-ups. From Golden Frieza to Black Frieza, every return forces Goku and Vegeta to struggle.
Especially, the Black Frieza form in the Granolah arc is so strong it can take down both Ultra Instinct Goku and Ultra Ego Vegeta with a single blow. Maybe that’s why Frieza has stayed popular for decades. He doesn’t need a whole clan, just his existence alone is enough to terrify the entire Dragon Ball universe.
