Taking online classes and exams is super convenient since you don’t have to leave your favorite room to finish your studies. But that convenience doesn’t help much when something unlucky happens, like what happened to college student Sam Lee.
Sam, a University of Georgia student, had to email her professor begging for a retake after failing an economics test because of an unbelievable accident.
She explained that she was eating a meatball sandwich while taking the online test when a meatball fell right onto her keyboard. Out of more than 100 keys, the unlucky meatball landed exactly on the Esc key.
At first, she was just upset about losing part of her sandwich, but when she saw her computer screen go blank, she realized the real disaster had hit, her economics test was gone.
“I spent six hours writing an email to my professor and sent it last night,” she said.
“Dear Professor Lastrapes,
During today’s test, I ran into technical difficulties and unexpected problems that affected my results. Something fell onto my computer and submitted the test before I even finished half the questions. The “something” was an unlucky meatball that dropped right on my keyboard while I was taking the test. It caused errors on my laptop and submitted the test prematurely.”
Sam only scored 39% on the test, so getting a retake was really important to her.
You might think such a ridiculous excuse wouldn’t be accepted, but surprisingly, the professor replied the next day with understanding.
“Samantha, that’s definitely the most unusual and original excuse I’ve ever heard for a poor grade. But with such a weird reason, it’s hard to believe you made it up,” the professor wrote back. “I have extended your Module 6 test deadline until midnight tonight.”
He even gave her a tip before retaking the test: “I suggest you take the test either before or after dinner.”
Of course, Sam was “overjoyed” to get the professor’s reply and especially to be allowed to retake the test “with hopefully a better score.”
Her Twitter post about the meatball mishap quickly caught the attention of tens of thousands online. Many found the story hilarious, while others admired the professor for being flexible and forgiving such a silly mistake, not many teachers would accept an excuse like that.
Sam herself was surprised by how viral her story became. “Honestly, I’m amazed it went viral like this,” she said. “It’s ironic that my brief moment of fame comes from a meatball.”
“Never trust a meatball, no matter how believable it sounds,” she concluded.
