7 Vietnamese Regions Shut Schools Amid Covid-19 Surge

Education departments across provinces halt summer classes, enforce strict health measures, and close schools in affected areas

1. Binh Dinh

On July 29, Binh Dinh’s Department of Education and Training issued a directive to strengthen urgent Covid-19 prevention measures in local schools.

They decided to suspend all extracurricular activities and banned extra tutoring classes both inside and outside schools for students from grades 1 to 11 during summer break. Preschools will continue normal teaching. For 12th graders preparing for exams, schools will keep offering classes and review sessions.

2. Nghe An

On July 29, Nghe An’s Department of Education ordered preschools to pause summer childcare and care activities until further notice. Earlier, the province banned all forms of summer tutoring. However, voluntary childcare during summer with parental consent is allowed.

3. Quang Nam

Quang Nam’s Department of Education ordered a halt to all activities at language centers, life skills education centers, and tutoring facilities across the province.

High schools, ethnic boarding schools, and continuing education centers must work with parents to monitor students’ health before the high school graduation exam. If students show symptoms like cough, fever, or difficulty breathing, local health authorities and the education department must be notified immediately.

Twelfth graders are urged to strictly follow hygiene and prevention measures and focus on home study to perform well in exams.

4. Hai Phong

On the evening of July 27, Hai Phong’s People’s Committee issued an urgent notice to prevent Covid-19 in schools and summer classes. Summer classes planned for July and August are canceled. For 12th graders and preschoolers, teachers must closely monitor students’ health and report any unusual signs immediately.

5. Vinh Long

Due to the complicated Covid-19 situation, Vinh Long’s Department of Education announced a suspension of summer classes for preschool and kindergarten children for the 2019-2020 school year across the province. Additionally, the provincial chairman, Lu Quang Ngoi, ordered strengthened Covid-19 prevention measures.

6. Quang Ngai

Starting the afternoon of July 26, all preschools must close and all extra tutoring activities are suspended to prevent Covid-19. However, exam review classes for the 2020 national high school graduation exam will continue, with strict health protocols at exam sites.

7. Da Nang

Students at preschools, language centers, IT, talent, life skills centers, and tutoring facilities must stay home. All student gatherings have been suspended since 1pm on July 26 until further notice. Private universities will decide on student gatherings based on their situation and Ministry guidance.

Several other provinces have also issued notices to boost Covid-19 prevention in education. In Hanoi, the Department of Education banned all forms of extra tutoring to ensure students enjoy a safe summer break.

Notably, Tay Ho district, where a Covid-19 case was confirmed, ordered all educational institutions to close to protect students’ health. Schools must also plan for social distancing and safety measures ahead of the upcoming first and sixth-grade enrollment season.
