Do you remember what the most popular social network in Vietnam was about 10 years ago? It wasn’t Facebook, TikTok, or Instagram. It was Zing Me, a Vietnamese social platform focused on gaming.
Back then, my friends and I didn’t know about selfies or fancy check-ins like today. We just logged into Zing Me to “raise fish,” “grow veggies,” “raise pigs,” “train dragons.” On good days, we’d “go up to the clouds,” when feeling restless we’d “shoot chickens,” if we felt entrepreneurial we’d “push carts to sell goods,” or even open a “restaurant” if we wanted to get fancy.
That’s how my school years passed peacefully, with a big part of my memories tied to Zing Me’s games. Of course, a hyperactive kid like me didn’t only play those games, I also dabbled in Crossfire, Conquer Online, Sword World, World of Tanks, and more. But the calmest, most relaxing moments were always spent immersed in those simple, lighthearted Zing Me games.
To be fair, the games on Zing weren’t anything extraordinary, and the graphics weren’t impressive. But the value wasn’t just in the games themselves, it was in how players interacted with each other. The platform was more than just gaming, it was about playing together, creating unforgettable memories as a community.
Even though Zing Me couldn’t compete with Facebook and eventually faded away, for those who lived through its golden age, those games will always live on in the beautiful memories of their youth.
