On the morning of March 15 in Thu Dau Mot City, the Binh Duong Department of Information and Communications, together with the provincial police, held a meeting with YouTuber Thơ Nguyễn regarding her “xin vía học giỏi” video posted on TikTok.
During the session, YouTuber Thơ Nguyễn explained she uploaded two parts of the “xin vía học giỏi” content on TikTok. The first video sparked controversy and uproar online. The second was a clarification aimed at children, stating “this is a regular doll, not a ghost doll, and to do well in school you have to study hard, not just ask for luck.”
According to Thơ Nguyễn’s explanation, TikTok’s policy limits videos to 60 seconds, which led her to post the content in two separate clips at different times, causing misunderstandings among the online community.
After reviewing the clips, authorities concluded that Thơ Nguyễn did not intend to violate regulations. However, during the meeting, she showed signs of poor health and mental distress, so she asked to pause and rest. It was agreed she would resume the session on the afternoon of March 16, 2021.
Thơ Nguyễn, whose real name is N.T.H.T (born 1992), is a YouTuber living and working in Binh Duong. She currently runs three channels: her main YouTube channel with 8.7 million subscribers, a TikTok account with 900,000 followers, and a Facebook fan page with 400,000 followers.
On March 11, Lê Quang Tự Do, Deputy Director of the Broadcasting and Electronic Information Department (Ministry of Information and Communications), told the press that the department had worked with the Political Security Division (Ministry of Public Security) to locate Thơ Nguyễn’s address and phone number to summon her for questioning over signs of superstition promotion on her channels.
Earlier, on March 10, social media buzzed over a clip where Thơ Nguyễn talked to a doll and “asked for good luck in studying” for kids. The video, posted on TikTok on February 27, had reached 5 million views by the afternoon of March 10.
Facing heavy criticism, Thơ Nguyễn later posted a new video where she cried and explained herself. She also stated that even if she stopped being a YouTuber, she would have enough money to live on.
