Diana Armstrong (USA) holds the Guinness World Record for the longest fingernails on a pair of hands. The total length of her nails reached 1306.58 cm (measured in 2022), averaging about 1.3 meters per nail, which is truly impressive!
Why She Never Cuts Her Nails
Diana says she stopped cutting her nails in 1997, the year her daughter passed away from asthma. She recalls, “The day before my daughter died, she spent a lot of time trimming my nails.” After her sudden loss, Diana felt she couldn’t cut her nails anymore.
After nearly 30 years of careful care, her nails can now stand upright on the ground.
Daily Life Full of Challenges

When dressing, she can only wear certain styles, especially tops with wide sleeves. Diana can’t wear jeans because she can’t pull up the zipper. Tasks like buttoning clothes or picking up items require help from family.
Personal Hygiene Challenges
Diana says drinking water from a bottle isn’t too hard, but for canned drinks, she needs a knife to open the lid. She used to drive, but as her nails grew longer, driving became dangerous, so she stopped.
Going to the bathroom is the biggest challenge. At home, it’s easier, but in public restrooms, it’s especially difficult. Diana usually chooses the largest stalls because tight spaces make it impossible for her to manage. The biggest issue is how she cleans herself.
Diana explains that her bathroom routine isn’t much different from others, except how she positions her nails. She says, “Others can wrap toilet paper around their hands to wipe, but I can’t do that. I have to use a lot of toilet paper and wipe slowly.”
Washing hands is also tricky. She can only wash one hand at a time and can’t rub both hands together with soap like most people.
Nail Care Takes Time and Effort
Finally, Diana shares that caring for and beautifying her nails is the most expensive and complicated part. She hasn’t been to a nail salon in 22 years, her nieces help her maintain them.
She can’t use regular nail tools to trim her nails. Instead, she uses woodworking tools to file and polish them. Each nail takes about 10 hours to finish. Painting her nails uses up to 20 bottles of polish each time, and it takes her nieces 4 days to complete the whole process. It’s truly a huge task.

At first, Diana’s children weren’t happy about her long nails. But once they understood it was to honor their family, they accepted and supported her.
