Dating violence has long gone beyond simple relationship conflicts. It’s a harsh reality turning promises of love into nightmares for those involved. Selfish possessiveness, twisted thinking, and alcohol-fueled rage have led many young people down a dark path.
Recently, the public was shocked by a case in South Korea where a man brutally attacked and threatened to kill his girlfriend just because she refused to have sex. This incident exposes the terrifying side of toxic relationships and serves as a stern warning about the legal consequences of disregarding another person’s body and life.
From Refusal to Ruthless Rage
According to legal documents, the incident happened in the early hours of December 6 last year at an apartment in Gangseo-gu, Seoul. The attacker, a 28-year-old man named Kim, targeted his girlfriend, referred to as Ms. B.
That night, Kim came home drunk and demanded sex from Ms. B. But she was tired and unwilling, so she firmly refused. Instead of respecting her choice and safety, Kim’s selfish pride and animalistic rage ignited.
His anger exploded as he started verbally abusing Ms. B with harsh insults. Then, the violence escalated. Kim punched her face and eyes with brutal force. The close-range blow caused extreme pain and serious physical injuries.

45 Terrifying Minutes: Chased with a Knife
Ms. B’s nightmare didn’t end with the punch. When she collapsed, begging and crying in despair, Kim showed no mercy. He grabbed a sharp aluminum pot from the floor, raised it threateningly, and warned he would smash her head.
Then he stormed into the kitchen, pulled out a 25cm long kitchen knife, pointed it at his trembling girlfriend, and screamed terrifying threats: “I will kill you, and I will die too.”
Terrified by his uncontrollable rage, Ms. B ran to the nearby bathroom and locked the door to escape the beating. But the thin wooden door couldn’t stop Kim’s violent intent. He aggressively broke down the door, barged in, and roared, “I will kill you with this knife.” For those long minutes, she faced unimaginable fear, caught between life and death.

Lifelong Physical and Emotional Scars
The brutal attack left Ms. B with not only deep emotional trauma but also permanent physical damage.
Medical records presented in court revealed that Kim’s punch caused a severe retinal detachment in Ms. B’s right eye. She underwent multiple complex and painful surgeries including retinal reattachment, removal of the damaged lens, and implantation of an artificial lens.
Despite the doctors’ efforts, her vision never fully recovered. Ms. B suffers ongoing nerve inflammation and distorted vision, seeing everyday objects as warped and blurry. This physical pain will stay with her for life, a tragic reminder of a toxic relationship gone horribly wrong.
Justice Served
Kim was charged with two serious crimes: causing grievous bodily harm and making deadly threats.
The Seoul Southern District Court harshly condemned his actions:
“The defendant directly attacked the victim’s eye, a highly sensitive and vital organ, causing severe, hard-to-repair injuries. He also used dangerous objects like an aluminum pot and kitchen knife to threaten the life of his partner. This crime outrages public sentiment.”
However, the court also considered mitigating factors: Kim fully admitted his crimes during investigation and trial, has a clean record with no prior offenses, and most importantly, a civil agreement was reached. Ms. B accepted his apology, received compensation, and expressed a wish that he not face harsh prison time.
On June 1, the court sentenced Kim to two years in prison but suspended the sentence with three years of probation. This means Kim won’t go to jail immediately but will be closely monitored. Any violation or further violence during probation will trigger immediate imprisonment. This verdict serves as a warning and lesson for reckless individuals who fail to control their actions and emotions, letting selfishness take over.
