Whenever we talk about Luffy, we think of a fearless young guy chasing the legendary One Piece treasure, backed by an insanely powerful family. His grandfather is a Marine hero, his father leads the Revolutionary Army, and his uncle is one of the Four Emperors feared across the pirate world. But in reality, throughout his adventures with the Straw Hat crew, Luffy has faced plenty of problems tied to his impressive family background.
First up is Luffy’s clash with Don Chinjao, nicknamed Drill Nose, a former pirate and head of the Chinjao family. He fought for the Mera Mera no Mi fruit in the Corrida Colosseum, with a bounty of at least 500 million berries.
Chinjao is probably the most stubborn grandpa in One Piece. He holds a grudge against Garp, which extends to Garp’s son Dragon and grandson Luffy. He believes the next generation must pay for the past. When he met Luffy, he said if he had known Dragon was Garp’s son earlier, he would have stopped Luffy from being born. Chinjao thinks death is too easy for Garp, and instead wants to kill Luffy to make Garp suffer losing a family member.
More recently, there’s Who Who, a Tobi Roppo under the Four Emperors’ Kaido, who also hates Luffy. The reason is well known: Luffy’s uncle, Red-Haired Shanks, stole the Rubber Devil Fruit from Who Who when he was part of CP9. Because he failed to protect the fruit, Who Who was imprisoned in Impel Down for 10 years. Two years ago, Who Who escaped when Luffy and Blackbeard showed up. Now in Wano, learning that the fruit he lost ended up with Luffy has made Who Who furious at the Straw Hat captain. So Shanks stole the fruit, and now his nephew Luffy is catching the heat.
Because of all this, One Piece fans think that even though Luffy is supposedly a “legacy kid,” he doesn’t get much help from his powerful family members.
