Why Gen Z Hates Answering Phone Calls

Ever felt your heart race or freeze up when your phone rings out of nowhere?

If you have, don’t worry, you’re not alone. A recent survey revealed a harsh truth: nearly 9 out of 10 young people feel “psychological trauma” every time their phone rings.

According to a Weibo poll with over 7,000 participants, 85% admitted they feel stressed when receiving a call. The topic “Why are young people increasingly afraid to answer phone calls?” is trending with millions of discussions.

Why has the phone ring become the enemy?

Psychologists point out some painful but very real reasons why Gen Z and Millennials would rather let calls go to voicemail than pick up:

1. Instant “On-air” pressure: Unlike texting (which is asynchronous communication) where you have time to think, edit, or even “read without replying,” phone calls demand immediate response. It’s like a live performance with no script, making those used to digital spaces feel out of control and stressed.

2. Phone calls = bad news? In an era where everything from food delivery to chatting happens via apps, a direct call usually means one of three things: an urgent matter, a boss or client pushing a deadline, or… a scam or insurance sales pitch. These negative associations create a natural defense mechanism: hearing the phone ring triggers thoughts of trouble.

3. Right to “silence” invaded: For many young people, after a long day of nonstop work, they need absolute quiet. A sudden call is seen as a rude invasion of personal space, forcing them into unwanted emotional labor.

Tips to overcome the fear of the ringing phone

To stop your smartphone from feeling like a torture device, experts suggest:

Clear boundaries: Set a rule that if it’s not urgent, please send a message instead.

Exposure therapy: Start by answering low-pressure calls (like delivery drivers) or call a close friend for just 30 seconds to get used to hearing a voice again.

The right to say no: Remember, you can choose not to answer if you’re not ready. A polite message like “I’m not available to talk right now, please text me” is the most civilized way to decline in 2026.

What about you? Are you the type to “pick up immediately” or “wait for the call to end and then text to ask what’s up”? Drop a comment below to see how many fellow phone-phobes are out there!
