In the world of Dragon Ball, many details that seem illogical at first actually have reasonable explanations when you look closely at the character design.
One of the biggest questions fans have debated for years is: why can Android 18, often called a robot, get married and have a child just like a normal human?

At first glance, the name Android 18 in Dragon Ball makes many think she’s a fully mechanical being, like sci-fi humanoid robots.
However, this is a common misunderstanding caused by translation. In the original, Android 18 is actually called “Artificial Human No. 18,” and more importantly, she’s a cyborg, meaning a human enhanced with technology, not a pure robot.
The key difference between a cyborg and an android is crucial. Androids are fully artificial machines designed to mimic human appearance and behavior. In contrast, cyborgs are still biologically human but have some parts upgraded or replaced with technology. This means their bodies retain basic functions, including reproductive capabilities.

In Android 18’s case, she was a normal human before Dr. Gero captured and modified her. The scientist upgraded her body with artificial parts and implanted an energy core that gave her incredible power. However, he didn’t replace her entire biological body. In other words, she remains human at her core.
That’s why Android 18 marrying Krillin and having their daughter Marron isn’t a plot hole but fits perfectly within the story’s logic. It also shows how Akira Toriyama blends sci-fi with everyday elements to create surprising yet believable scenarios.

Beyond her ability to have children, being a cyborg gives Android 18 other unique traits. She can get stronger through training like a human but maintain nearly unlimited stamina thanks to her energy core. Her aging process is also slower, helping her keep a youthful appearance for a long time.
After leaving her villain role behind, Android 18 became an essential member of the Z Fighters in Dragon Ball Z. She fought in major battles, from the Tournament of Power to facing dangerous enemies like Moro and Cell Max, all while maintaining her family life with Krillin. From a villainous robot, Android 18 evolved into a unique character who is both powerful and cold but also deeply human. The fact that she can have a child, which might seem odd at first, actually adds depth to her character and shows that in Dragon Ball, the line between human and machine is never absolute.
