In Vietnam’s esports scene, Phuong Thao has become a beloved and familiar figure. Known as the hottest MC in Arena of Valor, she captivates audiences not just with her radiant looks, smooth voice, and professional hosting skills, but also with her deep understanding of the game. Her charm has won her fans both domestically and internationally after her outstanding performances at major tournaments.

But behind the spotlight and praise, Phuong Thao often faces a sad reality: criticism and insults from some local viewers. She has openly expressed her disappointment and concern about this issue multiple times, highlighting a troubling side of today’s online community culture.

From international fans’ admiration to harsh words from local viewers

There’s no denying Phuong Thao’s appeal on the global stage. At major Arena of Valor events, the Vietnamese MC’s graceful and confident presence has earned countless compliments from gamers abroad.

Fans admire her beauty, professionalism, and ability to energize the crowd. Many comments in English, Thai, and Indonesian praise Phuong Thao as the “most beautiful MC,” the “goddess of Arena of Valor,” and express hopes to see her more often at international events. This shows her influence and the goodwill she has built beyond Vietnam’s borders.

However, unlike the warm support from international fans, Phuong Thao sometimes endures harsh words from her fellow countrymen. She has spoken out about being criticized and scrutinized for her appearance and even faced baseless negative comments about her professional skills. This creates a sad paradox: a talent recognized and loved internationally yet pressured by local supporters.

At her most recent event, APL 2025, she was not spared. Sharing her thoughts, Phuong Thao wrote:

“Every international season, standing alongside my tall, beautiful colleagues, I read many ‘body samsung’ comments about my short height and chubby figure. Most come from some Vietnamese men, even spilling over to foreign channels, happily gossiping and criticizing the only Vietnamese girl in the photo, saying things like: ‘Looks so outmatched, probably as tall as their ears without shoes, go have a baby already, looks like a diaper,’… Words I’ve wished they wouldn’t say to me anymore.

But honestly, I’ve been through this for six years, daily, to the point I’m used to the comment styles from some viewers. I’ve felt depressed, wanted to quit, thought the stage wasn’t for me. I even worked out two hours a day to get in shape, become the best version of myself, only to realize those talks never stop :)) That’s when I understood I can’t change others, only how I see things. Since then, I’ve never worked just to ‘please everyone.'”

The sad state of part of the online community

Many people hide behind social media anonymity to post negative, personal insults without accountability. They freely criticize everything from looks and outfits to voice and gestures. As a public figure, Phuong Thao naturally becomes a target of such comments.

Female MCs and hot girls especially face harsh judgments about their appearance. Instead of focusing on their contributions and talents, some dig up and nitpick minor flaws. This shows a lack of respect for their hard work and effort, and little empathy for the pressure they endure.

The heartfelt words of a professional

In this recent share, Phuong Thao said:

“More than anyone, I deeply understand my own value and strengths. I work hard to develop a strong voice, sharp thinking, and a steel spirit to make up for my shortcomings. But this effort isn’t to change the prejudices of those who dislike me. I fight for my vision and dreams, and out of gratitude for the fans who always support and love the small Phuong Thao burning on stage with them. I know exactly why I’ve stood here for six years and what I’m dedicating myself to.

Another season ends, and I’m still here.

After finishing my duties, standing next to colleagues I love with a carefree smile, still in my 12cm heels, posing on tiptoes as usual.

Finally, I want to share this quote to answer the first question: Confidence isn’t walking into a room thinking you’re better than anyone else there, it’s not feeling the need to compare yourself to anyone.”

Phuong Thao’s struggle is not just her own story but a wake-up call about online behavior culture. A strong community needs not only many members but also civility and mutual respect. Being loved by international fans is a pride, but facing criticism from her own countrymen is a pain and a big concern.

She proves that talent and effort are always recognized, even when facing hardships. Hopefully, her story will help build a more positive, respectful, and civilized Vietnamese online community.
