Games aren’t just entertainment or art, they can be full of clever illusions. Sometimes developers make you think you’re safe, only to pull a surprise twist that teaches you not to trust what you see.

In part 1, we covered creative tricks developers use to craft blockbuster hits. Now, let’s dive into more surprises that catch players off guard!

Doom & Assassin’s Creed, The less health you have, the tougher you seem

Both games share a trick where your health bar is adjusted to make fights last longer. Playing as Doomguy, you feel like an unstoppable Rambo, firing nonstop with demons charging at you but barely dying. In Assassin’s Creed, the assassin hero is surprisingly tanky, taking hits like a seasoned fighter.

That feeling of barely hanging on? It’s because developers tweak your health bar so it looks like you’re about to die, but you actually have more health left. This gives you a last chance to turn the tide before it’s game over.

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Real-time graphics switching

This isn’t a secret feature and doesn’t change gameplay much, but it’s pretty cool. Released in 2011, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary lets you switch between old and new graphics with just one button press, smoothly and instantly.

Developers achieved this by running two game engines simultaneously, allowing on-the-fly graphics changes without leaving the game menu. Pretty handy!

Left 4 Dead 2, The AI targets the best player

Shooting zombies in Left 4 Dead 2 is a blast, especially with friends. But the real star is the “A.I Director.” It’s smart and keeps you in line. If you stray too far from the group, it sends zombies after you. Play too well, and the Director notices, sending more zombies your way. It’s like you’re hunted for breaking the rules.

Alien Isolation, The alien has “two brains”

The gameplay feels like hide-and-seek, but the Xenomorph almost always predicts where Amanda Ripley will go. That’s because the alien has “two brains” that constantly conflict.

One brain always knows where you’re hiding, while the other is clueless but relentlessly hunts Ripley. This dual system makes Alien Isolation unique and realistic. If the alien only had the second brain, players could easily distract it with noise and win.

Bioshock, Enemies always miss their first shot

Developer Ken Levine revealed on Twitter that to make exploring Rapture easier, enemy shots always miss their first bullet. This lets you feel like a true super soldier, dodging bullets effortlessly as you explore the underwater city.
