In a recent interview on the Sway podcast, Apple CEO Tim Cook opened up about the upcoming lawsuit with Epic Games, his plans for running Apple over the next decade, and the new privacy policies in iOS 14.5.
Tim Cook was also asked about Apple’s electric car plans, including the question: “What do you think about Elon Musk?”
Cook admitted he greatly admires Elon Musk and Tesla, even though he has never spoken to Musk directly.
Late last year, Elon Musk tweeted that he had tried to sell Tesla to Apple years ago, but Tim Cook never even attended any meetings to discuss a deal.
“You know, I’ve never spoken with Elon, though I really admire and respect the company he’s built. I think Tesla has done something unbelievable, not only taking the lead but holding that lead for a long time in electric vehicles. So I really admire them,” Cook said.
Rumors about Apple developing an electric car have been around since 2015. Back then, the secret project was called Project Titan. However, Apple has never confirmed or revealed any details.
After a few years, reports suggested Apple had abandoned the project and was focusing only on self-driving technology. More recently, there have been rumors that Apple is returning to electric car production, possibly launching a vehicle by 2025.
It’s likely that Tim Cook’s decision not to meet with Elon Musk or buy Tesla will be one of his biggest regrets if Apple really plans to build its own electric car.
