Mr Beast is a name that’s no stranger to many, especially those who follow the global YouTube community. He first gained major attention during the PewDiePie vs. T-Series battle, becoming known as a “gold sponsor” who spent hundreds of thousands of dollars supporting PewDiePie. Recently, he skyrocketed in fame again by creating a real-life Squid Game competition with prize money worth billions of Vietnamese dong. Even in his casual vlogs, he’s not shy about dropping huge sums, sometimes millions of dollars, just to hype up his viewers.
But there’s a lot you probably don’t know about Mr Beast, including some hidden sides even his fans haven’t heard about.
Dropped out of college, started YouTube at 13
Mr Beast actually began his YouTube career at just 12 years old under the name Mr Beast 6000, mainly focusing on Minecraft content. Nearly a decade later, he’s a massive success, and even his old videos have been rediscovered by fans, racking up millions of views.
What few know is that Mr Beast only attended college for two weeks. He dropped out and told his mom, “I’d rather be poor than go to class. I don’t want to do anything but YouTube.” At that time, he had to move out after his mom didn’t support his choice. But by then, he already had one million subscribers. Shortly after dropping out, he returned home and gave his mom $100,000 (about 2.4 billion VND).
Accused of mistreating employees
To run his YouTube channel, Mr Beast has hired around 50 employees. However, not everyone has a good impression of him as a boss. Matt Turner, who worked for Mr Beast for over a year, said, “I never got any recognition, he always gave credit to others. Besides insults, there was nothing else.”
Another employee, Nate Anderson, even made a video about the worst week of his life working for Mr Beast. That video led to numerous threats from Mr Beast’s fans, forcing Nate to take it down.
Known for stirring controversy with his posts
While Mr Beast is hugely popular, he’s also sparked plenty of controversy and has a large group of anti-fans, mostly due to some of his over-the-top statements.
For example, he once used very offensive language about the LGBTQ+ community and even offered $10,000 for comments that supported his remarks. He’s also known for frequently criticizing other individuals and streamers.
