Few know that the role of Tang Sanzang in Journey to the West was played by three different actors. The first two, Wang Yu and Xu Shaohua, left the production for personal reasons. The third actor, Chi Chongrui, became widely loved for his upright appearance, perfectly fitting the image of a high-ranking monk. However, when revisiting the series, many viewers were surprised by Tang Sanzang’s true personality.

A standout example is in the episode “Women’s Kingdom,” where Tang Sanzang and Zhu Bajie accidentally drink from the Zi Mu River and both become pregnant. While Zhu Bajie is excited and eager to become a father, Tang Sanzang worries and looks for a way to “get rid” of the fetus. This moment reveals a contradiction in Tang Sanzang’s mindset. He preaches compassion and kindness, so why would he want to reject his own child? Could it be that his role as a monk and spiritual leader makes him afraid to face this “scandal”?
Tang Sanzang also frustrates viewers with his stubbornness and narrow-mindedness. In the episode “Three Battles with White Bone Demon,” he scolds and chants a spell called Kim Co, causing Sun Wukong pain, all because of a misunderstanding. Even though Sun Wukong repeatedly saves him, Tang Sanzang continues to doubt his loyalty. These actions show that beneath his dignified exterior, Tang Sanzang is just human, full of desires, anger, love, and hate.
In short, Tang Sanzang’s character proves that no one is perfect. Behind noble titles and moral teachings, everyone has their own hidden flaws.
