Years ago, tattoos weren’t as common and people with lots of ink often faced negative judgment from society. Today, while those views have eased a bit, in many places tattoos are still seen mostly in a bad light and can even hurt job prospects. That’s why the recent appearance of a badass teacher in Japan caught the internet by surprise. By day, he looks neat and scholarly, but when he takes off his crisp shirt, he transforms into a totally different person.

In Japan, tattoos have an even heavier stigma because years ago, full-body tattoos like the ones shown here were mostly associated with gangsters, known as the Yakuza. So seeing this tattooed teacher caused quite a buzz online. What’s surprising is that instead of hiding his ink, this handsome guy openly shares photos of his tattoos on social media.

Despite his extremely cool tattoos that make him look like a real Yakuza, on his personal pages he comes across as pretty normal. He often shares his love for reading and gardening, and sees his tattoos as just part of his body. It doesn’t seem to affect his job as a teacher at all.

While many comments say tattoos are normal and nothing to worry about, quite a few people are concerned that in an educational setting with kids, teachers shouldn’t look like this. But this teacher’s case isn’t the most extreme. Before him, Helaine, a preschool teacher in France, shocked both students and parents with his heavily tattooed body, looking almost alien. He was even banned from teaching at a preschool because he scared the kids too much.
