Including a charger inside smartphone boxes has long been a standard feature. But manufacturers now seem ready to change that by cutting most accessories from the package.
Not just Apple, according to the latest reports from South Korea, Samsung will also stop including chargers in the boxes of upcoming smartphone models. This means if you want to charge your phone, you’ll have to buy a charger separately from Samsung or third-party brands.
Samsung is currently one of the world’s biggest smartphone makers, selling hundreds of millions of phones each year. So by not including chargers, the company can save a lot on production, packaging, and shipping costs.
On the flip side, this move lets Samsung offer new phones with stronger specs and more premium features while keeping prices close to previous models.
Reports say Samsung will apply this change to certain smartphone models, starting as soon as next year, less than six months away. Unlike earphones, which are also sometimes included, chargers are essential accessories for smartphone users.
However, today’s smartphones have mostly standardized charging ports and protocols. So including a charger in the box is less critical since users can use existing chargers to power multiple devices, from phones and smartwatches to wireless earbuds.
