Just as expected, Samsung’s new Galaxy S21 lineup launched yesterday no longer includes a charger in the box. Each Galaxy S21 comes with a USB-C to USB-C cable, but which charger you use is up to you.
To ease the blow for customers, Samsung announced it will cut the price of its 25W charger from $35 down to $20. Another notable point is that this year’s flagship starts at $800, compared to $1,000 for last year’s Galaxy S20.
If Samsung’s move feels familiar, that’s because it’s exactly what Apple did. Last year, Apple stopped including chargers with new Apple Watch models, the iPhone 12 series, and other iPhones still on sale. The reason given was to reduce carbon emissions during production, protect the environment, and lower shipping costs.
At the time, Apple’s rivals like Samsung and Xiaomi mocked the decision. Samsung posted an image of a charger with the caption “Sell your Galaxy phone with a charger” and the message: Your #Galaxy gives you what you want. From the basics like a charger to the best camera, battery, performance, storage, and even a 120Hz screen, all in one smartphone. Earlier this month, it was discovered that Samsung quietly deleted this post.
