As AI art takes over, a Reddit mod’s decision adds fuel to the fire.

Recently, an incident on Reddit stirred frustration among amateur artists. A Reddit user posted their artwork on the r/Art subreddit only to have it deleted outright. The reason? The moderators suspected it was AI-generated.

r/Art is a massive Reddit community with over 22 million members where users freely share their creations and receive feedback. The subreddit rules clearly ban AI-generated content.

Late last year, a Vietnamese artist shared their work on r/Art but it was almost immediately removed. When the artist tried to reach out to the moderators for fairness, they received a cold response. Below is the exchange that sparked widespread backlash.

Complaint about permanent ban!!:

– Reddit user: I am the artist behind the painting “Inspiration Amidst the Warzone.” I’m writing to complain about this unfair ban. I can provide proof of my process or the PSD file [Photoshop file] of this painting. I did not use any AI tools and your ban is wrong. Sorry for my poor English and thanks for your time! Here’s my portfolio. Please check it out:

– Moderator: I don’t believe you. Even if you “painted” it yourself, it’s obvious this is a design created by AI keywords, so it means nothing. If you’re a “real” artist, you should find a different style because A) no one will believe you when you say it’s not AI-made, and B) AI can do better in seconds what takes you hours.

– Automated system message: You have been temporarily muted on r/Art. You won’t be able to message the moderators for 28 days.

This exchange shows the Reddit mod dismissing the artist’s style as AI-like, equating a style that likely took years to develop with automated keyword-driven image synthesis.

*Recently, new AI image generators have taken the internet by storm. These systems create images based on user-input keywords by pulling from huge databases and synthesizing new pictures. Popular tools include MidJourney and DALL-E.

This behavior enraged the r/Art community. Yet users felt powerless against the mod’s authority: posts criticizing the ban and comments supporting the artist were deleted, and some users were permanently banned from r/Art.

This incident highlights a long-standing problem on Reddit and deepens the divide among artists.

Reddit mods abusing power and issuing bans without clear cause is nothing new. But this case reveals another issue: people can no longer tell the difference between human-made art and AI creations. Influential voices like Reddit mods are fueling resentment toward technological progress.

With even basic English skills, anyone can now generate stunning images with AI. This puts artists at risk of losing jobs. AI’s ability to produce unique illustrations threatens young and inexperienced artists’ opportunities to work and grow.

The r/Art mod’s actions only add fuel to the fire, making amateur artists feel even more powerless against AI’s rise.

The story ends without justice for the Vietnamese artist. The community’s anger has cooled, the artist got no vindication, and things continue as usual.

But the AI story doesn’t end here. It reminds us of another AI system shaking up forums and tech news everywhere.

Not just artists, writers face the same threat

Recently, ChatGPT has emerged as an all-knowing chatbot. Based on data up to 2022, ChatGPT can answer many questions, even explaining complex topics like blockchain or quantum mechanics in simple terms.

Another key point: most ChatGPT answers are unique. Ask it for a 500-word essay and it can produce two essays with different styles quickly. Some students have even tried using ChatGPT to write essays but got caught and failed for cheating.

Both AI image generators and ChatGPT share traits: they pull from huge databases to synthesize meaningful results. Just as AI art tools disrupt painters, ChatGPT is shaking up writers. Copywriting and translation jobs could fade if AI can produce smooth, fluent text.

Still, like artists, many writers aren’t worried about losing their jobs yet. ChatGPT and similar chatbots represent a broad “weeding out” process.

As these AI systems improve with richer data, they will replace certain jobs, much like automation replaced manual labor. This is another way technology frees humans from repetitive tasks.

In the past, many jobs disappeared due to tech advances. Maybe we’re witnessing another major societal shift?

The future is uncertain but one thing is clear: AI is here to stay

Born from human brilliance, AI is already improving lives across industries and creating new value.

AI technology appeared and will continue alongside humanity for years to come. It’s the natural result of humans asking machines to “think” for us, from simple calculations to complex tasks no person could finish in a lifetime.

Rejecting AI is like going against human and technological progress. Debates about AI’s power will fade once AI reaches a technological singularity, the sci-fi moment when tech evolves beyond control and transforms civilization in unimaginable ways.

Don’t let emotions cloud judgment, recognize AI’s true value

Can AI replace human creativity, especially artists?

No artwork pleases everyone, so absolute standards don’t exist in art. A piece is “art” if it evokes emotion. AI-generated images impress viewers now, so they’ve partly succeeded as art.

That awe will fade. When AI becomes just another part of progress, we’ll see it for what it is: a tool that supports human creativity and production.
