Jerry Hicks, a man from Banner Elk, North Carolina, decided to retire after 56 years as a carpenter, even though he hadn’t planned to before.
This change came after he unexpectedly won a $1 million lottery jackpot (about 25 billion VND).

Jerry said that one morning, while heading into a convenience store to buy food, he unexpectedly found $20 in the parking lot. When he got inside, he happily decided to buy a lottery ticket. However, the store only had Extreme Cash tickets left. Even though it wasn’t what he originally planned, Jerry bought one anyway.
Incredible luck came his way.
That evening, when checking the results, Jerry found out he’d won the $1 million jackpot. According to the North Carolina Education Lottery, the odds of winning this prize are 1 in 2,017,650. Winners have two payout options: either $50,000 a year for 20 years or a lump sum of $600,000. Jerry chose the lump sum and received $429,007 (about 11 billion VND) after taxes.

After claiming his prize, Jerry said he plans to visit his favorite buffet restaurant and try every dish they offer. He also shared that he will donate part of his winnings to a children’s charity. The rest will be split among his children and used for his retirement.
