Combining fitness with creativity, a young man turns his daily runs into unique artworks. It sounds unlikely but he’s been doing this every morning.
His name is Dang Viet, a legal staff member in Hanoi. After discovering a fitness app that tracks running or cycling routes by coloring the path orange on a map, he started using this feature to create interesting images while running.

Depending on the complexity, his running routes range from 10 to 40 km. For longer routes, he wakes up at 3 a.m. and runs for 7-8 hours. For simpler drawings, he starts at 4:30 or 5:30 a.m. and finishes in about 3 hours.
Before running, Dang Viet sketches the design on his phone, then uses the map app to check the route and measure distances. While running, he frequently checks his phone to avoid wrong turns. From his first creation, he now has 19 unique map artworks.
He started running in 2020, but it was the COVID-19 social distancing rules that gave him the time to pursue this hobby. Besides improving his health, it also helped him explore Hanoi’s streets in a new way.
