Fomalhaut Techno Solutions and Nikkie Asian Review have released a report breaking down the parts cost for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro. The iPhone 12 parts cost $373, while the retail price is $829. For the iPhone 12 Pro, parts cost $406 compared to a $999 retail price.
The most expensive component in both models is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X55 5G modem chip, priced at $90. Next is the OLED display panel made by Samsung, costing $70.
The new A14 Bionic chip costs $40. RAM and flash storage are priced at $12.8 and $19.2 respectively.
The new iPhones use Sony CMOS camera sensors, which cost between $5.4 and $7.4.
The report also notes that parts made in South Korea account for 26.8% of the total value of iPhone 12 components. Parts from the US and Japan make up 21.9% and 13.6% respectively.
China assembles the iPhone 12, but parts made in China only represent 5% of the total component cost.
While the retail price of the iPhone 12 is more than double the parts cost, this doesn’t reflect Apple’s profit per unit. Apple also spends heavily on research, software development, salaries, and marketing.
According to TechInsights, the parts cost for last year’s iPhone 11 Pro Max was $490.5. Although the parts cost for the iPhone 12 Pro Max isn’t available yet, it looks like costs have increased compared to last year.
