Hoang and Ly got married in May 2014. The couple didn’t have children, but their marriage was peaceful until Ly started obsessively following and supporting a male streamer online.
At first, her donations were small, but over time they grew to an unbelievable 1 million yuan (nearly 4 billion VND). From September 2021 to February 2023, Ly regularly gifted and sent money to the streamer named Liu every time he went live. She said it was to “support her idol” and “get attention.” But to Hoang, it wasn’t just wasteful, it was destroying their shared assets and pushing their family toward financial ruin. This money was their joint savings from years of work, including loans taken for business investments.
Besides the donations, Ly and her online idol frequently chatted on WeChat with messages that were far more intimate than just friendship. Hoang said he had no idea his wife had spent such a huge amount until their family budget suddenly ran dry. Only then did he start digging and was shocked by the truth.
Hoang immediately filed for divorce and sued the streamer, claiming the donations were invalid and demanding Liu return 550,000 yuan (about 2 billion VND). He stated that his wife had suffered from depression and was hospitalized for a month due to her condition. Liu allegedly took advantage of her vulnerable mental state to engage her in emotional conversations, which led her to transfer such a large sum. Since this money was part of their shared marital assets and given without Hoang’s consent, it seriously violated his legal rights.
The streamer argued that the female fan voluntarily donated on the livestream platform rather than through private transfers. He also said he only received about 40% of the total donations.
In the end, Shanghai’s No. 2 Intermediate People’s Court ruled that the streamer must return over 300,000 yuan (nearly 1.1 billion VND) to Hoang. Because the money was marital property, the couple still needs to negotiate how to split the returned funds.
This story serves as a harsh warning about the dangers of excessive donations to streamers or online idols. While supporting your favorite creators is normal, when it crosses financial limits and seriously impacts real life, it can lead to tragic consequences.
