There’s no denying that high school love is one of the purest and most adorable experiences in life. But sometimes parents worry that relationships might distract us from studying. Still, there are plenty of stories that prove the opposite: falling in love can actually motivate couples to study harder, not wanting to fall behind their partner. Sometimes, seeing your significant other’s effort pushes you to become a better student than before!
Thanh and Trang from Hanoi are a perfect example of love boosting academic performance. Both born in 2002, they just graduated high school and are about to face one of the most important exams of their lives.
Their relationship hasn’t been smooth. They met back in 10th grade at a school event. Thanh shared:
“After chatting for a while, we agreed to date. But honestly, I didn’t really think it was love at first because I was pretty indifferent and inattentive, so she broke up with me. I was indifferent too, so I just agreed. Looking back, I think that was a mistake but also a necessary step that led us to where we are now.”
“After that breakup, in 11th grade, I tried dating a few others but realized no one compared to her. So by the end of 11th grade, I tried reaching out again but she really hated me. The worst part was knowing she had a new boyfriend. Oh, my heart was broken!”
During the summer before 12th grade, Thanh heard that Trang had broken up with her boyfriend. He also learned that the guy blamed himself, which made Thanh even more determined to win her back.
“Learning from my mistakes in 10th grade, this time I paid more attention to her, so she accepted being friends with me and stopped hating me. But it took a few months before she agreed to get back together. As of August 10, the day of our university entrance exam, it’s been exactly one year,” Thanh shared.
What’s even more impressive is that their grades have improved significantly: “In 10th and 11th grade, my average was only around 8.3 to 8.4, but after nearly a year of dating her, my final average this year is 9.4. And she’s the top student in class, excelling in every subject, so I have to work hard or people will say we don’t match.”
Looking ahead, Thanh plans to study abroad while Trang wants to attend Hanoi Medical University. Thanh added, “I’ll always do my best to see her smile because she looks the most beautiful when she’s smiling, shining so brightly.”.
No one can predict the future, but one thing’s for sure: they will always be one of the most beautiful parts of each other’s high school memories.
