A gamer in the UK had a life-changing surprise when he decided to sell his childhood Pokémon card collection to fund his wedding.

What’s amazing is that instead of just a few hundred pounds, he ended up getting tens of thousands of dollars, which converts to billions of Vietnamese dong.

The main character is 37-year-old gamer Andrew Braund.

Before his big day, Andrew planned to sell part of his Pokémon card collection to help cover wedding costs. Thinking these were just old childhood items, he estimated the whole set was worth about 500 pounds, a modest amount compared to wedding expenses.

But everything changed when he asked a friend who knows about collectibles to check the cards. What seemed like ordinary cards were quickly identified as rare, especially three Charizard cards from the 2003 Skyridge set, one of the most sought-after series in the Pokémon Trading Card Game.

The cards were then sent to Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) for grading, which determines their market value. The results exceeded expectations as the cards scored high grades despite years of storage, making them auction-ready. The three Charizard cards went to Ewbank’s Auctioneers, a respected UK auction house, where they quickly caught collectors’ attention and sold for far more than expected. The total value topped $40,000, leaving Andrew stunned.

“I was honestly shocked. When I learned how much those cards were worth, I could hardly believe it and almost panicked,” Andrew shared about discovering his long-forgotten treasure.

Specifically, a holographic Charizard graded 9 sold for $21,250. Another nearly perfect card fetched $16,250, while a reverse-holographic version added $3,500. Altogether, the total came to about $41,000, enough to cover most of Andrew’s upcoming wedding expenses.

Andrew’s story highlights the booming Pokémon card collecting market, which has exploded in recent years. Cards tied to childhood memories can now be valuable assets, especially rare sets or those kept in great condition.
