Most of us usually assume that online games, especially MOBAs that demand quick reflexes and sharp skills, are only for younger players. When it comes to elderly folks, it’s rare to think they can handle a MOBA, let alone compete in tournaments, since reflexes and eyesight tend to decline with age. But while it’s tough for seniors to go up against younger players, competing against peers their own age is a totally doable idea, one we hadn’t really seen until recently. That changed when images of enthusiastic men and women in their 80s sitting in front of screens at a League of Legends tournament went viral online.

Recently, a senior welfare foundation called Hongdao surprised many by announcing an upcoming esports tournament exclusively for seniors, scheduled for November 28. This news quickly sparked buzz online. If you think this event is just for fun, that’s partly true, but don’t underestimate how seriously these seniors are taking the competition.

Specifically, the seniors went through a training program for League of Legends that ran from August through November. Each week, they dedicated two hours to learning new strategies and practicing. Some even arrived an hour early to get extra practice time. Many took detailed notes on new champions and popular tactics, constantly asking their coach questions. At home, they asked their children and grandchildren to help them practice and often asked each other, “What time are we going online today?” to form teams for matches.

The seniors’ focused expressions and dedication moved many young people. It just goes to show, passion for gaming doesn’t care about age or skill level.
