The pandemic has severely impacted economies worldwide. That’s why many governments rolled out relief packages to help businesses survive financial hardships. But sometimes, this money doesn’t get used as intended, especially when it falls into the hands of unscrupulous directors like the main character in this story.

Recently, the Georgia court system in the U.S. stirred up online buzz after filing a lawsuit against a man named Vinath Oudomsine. He was accused of misusing part of the economic relief funds he borrowed for his company last year. Vinath claimed his company had 10 employees and annual revenue over $235,000. But the pandemic hit them hard, causing significant losses.

Vinath successfully borrowed about $85,000 in relief funds. But instead of using it to support his business, he spent most of it on rare Pokemon cards. Specifically, he dropped $57,789, nearly $1.5 million VND, on his Pokemon card collection. The details didn’t specify which Pokemon cards were involved.

Eventually, authorities discovered Vinath not only misused the relief money but also lied about his company’s employee count and revenue. He now faces fraud charges, with a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, over 5.5 billion VND. That’s a harsh price to pay for his obsession with collecting rare Pokemon cards.
