Today, Dan Lok is a global brand. When people hear his name, they think of a top influencer shaping the skills economy and a sharp entrepreneur. But not everyone knows that this $75 million businessman faced many struggles before reaching success.

Here’s Dan’s inspiring story:
A Rough Childhood
When Dan was young, his parents divorced and his mother moved to Canada. At first, Dan had a tough time in his hometown of Hong Kong, hanging out with a bad crowd. He even ended up at the police station multiple times for fights and was bailed out by family.
Once, a police officer advised Dan’s father to send him away from Hong Kong because staying there could ruin him. That’s why at 14, Dan moved with his mother to start a new life in Canada.

But Dan didn’t speak English and couldn’t communicate with anyone. He struggled through high school and became shy. Still, he had a strong entrepreneurial spirit. Wanting to take good care of his mom, Dan started thinking of ways to make money.
His First Business
Dan’s first income came from lawn mowing. He stumbled on the idea by chance. While jogging, he saw an elderly man struggling to mow his lawn. Dan offered to help, and after finishing, the man paid him $20.
That made Dan realize he could turn this into a business. But he didn’t have a mower to work independently. So he went back to the old man and made a deal: borrow the mower in exchange for free weekly lawn care. With this “starter kit,” Dan began looking for customers.

Dan’s aunt also ran a business and often printed flyers to advertise. Spotting another opportunity, Dan noticed the flyers only had ads on one side. He arranged to print his lawn care ads on the back, and in return, he would deliver the flyers. Then he went door to door, slipping flyers under doors.
Dan was so confident he excitedly told his mom the phone was ringing with lawn care requests. But to his surprise, no one called. After a week of silence, he decided to take bolder action. He went to the nicest neighborhood and found the house with the wildest lawn.
Without permission, Dan borrowed the mower and trimmed the lawn neatly. Then he sat on the porch waiting for the owner to come home. The owner actually drove past without recognizing his own house and had to turn around. When he found out what Dan had done, he generously gave him $100.
Realizing he couldn’t wait for customers to come to him, Dan went around the neighborhood introducing himself as the person who had mowed that lawn. That’s how his business got started.
A Harsh Lesson
After a short time working at a grocery store, Dan felt it wasn’t for him and got drawn into online sales. He tried selling on eBay and asked a neighbor knowledgeable about the internet for help. Trusting him, Dan gave the neighbor money borrowed from friends and family to start the business.
But one day, when Dan stopped by to check on progress, he was shocked to find the neighbor’s house empty. That was Dan’s first bitter lesson.

After carrying a $150,000 debt at age 20 from that scam, Dan started 13 different companies over the next 3 years, but each one went bankrupt. These experiences pushed him to learn more about online business.
His First Big Break
After reading a book on marketing, Dan became obsessed with the field. Digging deeper, he discovered marketing expert Alan Jacques. He studied sales letters and attended Alan’s seminars, hoping to meet his idol.
One day, Dan boldly invited Alan to lunch and they talked for hours. But when Dan asked Alan to mentor him, Alan declined. Undeterred by past failures, Dan kept showing up at Alan’s office for a month, doing whatever he could to prove his value, even picking up trash.
Finally, Alan agreed. Dan dropped out of school to learn copywriting. Though he didn’t make much money at first, the year under Alan’s guidance was worth millions to him. Dan started offering marketing services, and within a year, his clients earned millions from his sales letters. By age 22, Dan was charging $10,000 per project.

Becoming a Millionaire and Retiring Early
Though successful as a copywriter, Dan noticed another need. Many clients asked how to best use his marketing materials. So he started offering marketing consulting.
Soon, he earned enough to pay off the $150,000 debt from the scam. Beyond business, Dan invested in real estate, which gave him steady income. He decided to retire at 27 as a millionaire.
At first, Dan spent months traveling and binge-watching shows. But after a few months, he got bored. He went back to Alan for advice. He didn’t want to keep “working” but also didn’t want a meaningless life.
Alan and another mentor encouraged Dan to teach and speak about his expertise. Now Dan runs an online course focused on closing sales over the phone. Recently, he launched a copywriting course. To date, Dan has taught over 1 million people essential marketing skills to make money more effectively.
