Controversial Foot-Washing Service Has Customers Doing the Work

Is this a clever marketing stunt or a disturbing role reversal?

In a market economy, the service industry always follows one unchanging rule: customers pay for comfort, relaxation, and the right to be served. The idea that “the customer is king” has long been the guiding principle for businesses, from budget to luxury. But at a foot therapy shop in Henan Province, China, this traditional mindset has been completely flipped by a one-of-a-kind business tactic: customers have to pay to serve the staff instead.

According to reports, this “reverse service” package exploded on social media. Related topics quickly hit 400 million views in just three days, turning comment sections into heated debate forums.

A netizen from Henan exposed this bizarre service package at a local nail and foot massage shop.

The service is named something poetic: “Reverse Time Flow.” At first, most customers assumed it was a premium health treatment aimed at rejuvenation. But once they learned the details, everyone was shocked.

The price is clearly listed at over 200 yuan (about 30 USD) for 70 minutes, comparable to mid-to-high-end foot care services locally. The only difference, and the most shocking part, is that customers don’t get to lie down and relax, they have to do the work themselves.

For the entire 70 minutes, customers must fetch basins, fill them with hot water, then squat on the floor to scrub, wash, rinse, and massage the feet of the female technicians. While customers sweat and strain on the floor, the female staff sit comfortably on high chairs, crossing their legs and casually scrolling on their phones, paying no attention to the “king” serving at their feet.

Even more striking, the shop has strict hiring rules for technicians in this service: they must be young women aged 18 to 23 with beautiful, delicate looks. Average appearances won’t get hired. Put bluntly, this model makes customers pay to do manual labor serving attractive young women.

Unique experience or shady marketing?

As news of this foot therapy shop spread, the online community quickly split into two opposing camps with fierce arguments.

Most consumers strongly condemned the model as bizarre and a form of paying to bind oneself. Many commented that after a tiring day, they just want to lie down and enjoy a massage, not squat and wash someone else’s feet. Some did the math, sarcastically noting that paying 200 yuan to work hard for 70 minutes is cheaper than hiring a nanny, praising the owner’s cunning. This group also expressed deep concern that this model could easily lead to inappropriate or sensitive behaviors.

On the other hand, a smaller group was excited, even half-jokingly asking for the shop’s address to try it out. They argued that if the technicians look like movie stars, paying 200 yuan or more to be served by beautiful women is worth it. Some saw it as a fun change of pace, a way to relieve stress by playing the role of a servant for a new kind of entertainment.

Why would a foot therapy shop, which usually requires care and precision, use such a counterintuitive approach?

The answer lies in fierce market competition.

To survive, many businesses resort to extreme tactics to spark curiosity and attract traffic. The more outrageous the stunt, the easier it is to create online buzz. This is essentially free advertising, drawing curious customers who want to check it out and take photos, even if it means facing criticism.

This isn’t unique to Henan. In Yangzhou, a massage shop caused a stir with a similar “reverse massage” package priced at 585 yuan for 60 minutes. The first 30 minutes, staff serve customers, then the next 30, customers massage the staff back. Clearly, competition in the service industry has shifted from skill quality to who can be more bizarre to grab attention.

Customers squatting to wash feet

While this model might bring short-term revenue thanks to curiosity, it’s definitely not a sustainable business strategy. It breaks basic consumer economics and ignores the core reason customers visit foot therapy shops: to relax and heal. Once the initial curiosity fades, no one will want to pay to exhaust themselves.

Moreover, this model carries serious risks. Hiring young, attractive women aged 18 to 23 and having customers squat to serve them can easily cross boundaries of decency or lead to harassment. One small slip could result in business suspension or legal action.

For now, the public debate shows no signs of cooling down.
