Google is rolling out a small but useful update for Android devices. When you turn on Wi-Fi while in Airplane mode for the first time, you’ll see a message saying, “Wi-Fi is on in Airplane mode. If you keep Wi-Fi enabled, it will automatically reconnect the next time you activate Airplane mode.”
If you tap on this notification, you’ll be taken to a support page titled “Keep wireless connections on Android devices in Airplane mode.”
Google explains that when you first enable Airplane mode on your Android device, both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections are turned off. Previously, Google allowed users to manually turn Bluetooth back on while in Airplane mode so they could use wireless headphones or Bluetooth smartwatches.
Now, Google is extending this feature to Wi-Fi as well. If you turn on Wi-Fi while in Airplane mode, your Android device will remember this setting and keep Wi-Fi active the next time you enable Airplane mode. Since many airlines offer in-flight Wi-Fi, this update makes it easier to stay connected to the internet while disabling cellular signals.
According to Google’s support page, this change will apply to all Android devices. However, Pixel smartphone users will be the first to get the update and experience the new feature.
