The National Steering Committee for Covid-19 Prevention announced on the morning of August 1 that Vietnam recorded another death, patient number 499.

Patient 499 is Mrs. T.T.B.T., 68 years old, living on Tran Cao Van Street, Xuan Ha Ward, Thanh Khe District, Da Nang City. She had a history of acute myeloid leukemia resistant to treatment, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure. She was undergoing treatment for blood cancer at the Neurology Department of Da Nang Hospital and was discharged on July 23.

Later, she developed a cough and fever and returned for a checkup at the Oncology Hospital. A test on July 30 confirmed she was positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

She developed complications including bone marrow failure, respiratory failure, and circulatory failure. By 7 pm on July 31, her respiratory condition worsened. Doctors intubated her and put her on a ventilator, consulting directly with experts from the Ministry of Health.

By 10:30 pm, the consultation and treatment efforts failed. The patient remained on a ventilator and high doses of vasopressors.

Professor Nguyen Gia Binh, Chairman of the Critical Care Society and member of the Covid-19 Treatment Subcommittee, reported that the patient passed away at 4:55 am on August 1 at Da Nang Oncology Hospital due to end-stage chemotherapy-resistant malignant blood cancer, severe pneumonia, and Covid-19.

This is the third Covid-19 death in Vietnam involving underlying health conditions. Yesterday, two other deaths were reported: patient 428 (due to a heart attack on top of underlying conditions and Covid-19) and patient 437 (due to septic shock with severe underlying illness and Covid-19).
