It sounds simple enough, but it unexpectedly led to a tragic accident involving a young gamer.
The trend involves placing two small magnets, less than 6mm in diameter, on the top and bottom of the tongue. From the outside, it looks like a real tongue ring. But the danger becomes clear, especially when kids try it. Recently, an 11-year-old boy from the UK accidentally swallowed several of these magnets and ended up in critical condition.
Fortunately, his parents noticed quickly and rushed him to the hospital. Doctors recognized the severity and performed emergency surgery. The cost of this reckless stunt was high, with nearly 12.7 cm of his intestine removed. But his case wasn’t the worst. A 13-year-old girl swallowed 15 magnets and had to be hospitalized immediately.
Doctors explained that these magnets have very strong magnetic forces and attract each other inside the intestines, squeezing the tissue and cutting off blood flow. Just looking at the gruesome surgery scars shows how dangerous and scary this TikTok challenge can be when accidents happen.
