Every few weeks, social media lights up with a new strange food trend. We’ve seen wild combos like scallion milk tea, milk tea noodles, or chicken salad with mangosteen. But the latest viral sensation is a daring visual challenge that’s blowing up on TikTok and Facebook. It’s called the “fairy hair cake,” a cake so bizarre-looking that both eaters and viewers get goosebumps and say: Nope, too creepy!

Up close with the weirdest cake of the year

Usually, when you think of cake, you imagine smooth frosting, delicate piped flowers, fresh juicy fruit slices, or sweet chocolate bars. Cakes represent sweetness, beauty, and happy moments.

But this cake flipping the script isn’t about the sponge or frosting flavor. Its viral shock factor comes from the topping covering the surface: a tangled mess of tiny, black, curly strands piled in clumps.

At first glance, without warning, most netizens can’t hide their confusion or shudder because it looks exactly like a clump of tangled hair someone just neatly placed on the frosting. This hyper-realistic look turns the cake into a nightmare for first-timers, turning eating into a true test of courage.

What’s behind the unsettling look?

After heated debates and many eye-rolls online, the truth about this strange cake finally came out. The “hair” topping is completely harmless and 100% natural. It’s fairy hair seaweed, a type of seaweed well-known in traditional Vietnamese and Asian cooking.

Usually, fairy hair seaweed is a premium, nutritious ingredient. When cooked in soups or stir-fries, it adds a crunchy texture that’s very satisfying. The trend of putting fairy hair seaweed on cake actually started on Thai social media, with the fun idea of creating a dessert that combines the sweetness of cream with the fresh, healthy taste of greens, adding vitamins and fiber.

But while the concept sounds cool, the reality is a different story. Leaving the seaweed’s black color and dry, stringy texture intact and sprinkling it directly on white cake creates a total visual fail.

Mukbang stars jump on the trend

When a food goes viral, TikTokers and content creators jump right in. Tons of mukbang and taste-test videos of the “fairy hair cake” have racked up millions of views thanks to hilarious and awkward reactions.

Leading the trend is TikToker Vinh Snack, who tried the original Thai-style version with raw fairy hair seaweed on cake. Just looking at it, he cautiously said, “I wouldn’t call this appealing. This cake is definitely for those who love wild stuff.” Taking the first bite was even scarier: the seaweed had no flavor but stuck to the cream, making it feel like chewing real hair. The dry strands also easily got stuck in the throat, causing discomfort.

Ninh Anh Bùi also joined in with a funny but honest review: “It just feels like there’s a clump stuck in my mouth. I guess people think this is a healthy way to eat sweets, but the look is just too realistic. If I had to choose again, I’d stick with fruit cakes, more vitamins and way better presentation!”

Fruit cake as a better alternative

Under these cake review videos, social media forums exploded with hilarious discussions. Most netizens agreed with the TikTokers, saying this cake is clearly made to stand out and grab views rather than offer real culinary value. It plays on people’s curiosity and love of watching others struggle.

If you’re brave and want to push your limits or shock your friends at a birthday party, this weird cake could be a fun choice. But if you just want a delicious dessert, the honest advice is to stick with classic fruit cakes to keep your taste buds and soul happy!
