A woman from Shanghai has gone viral after accusing a ride-share driver of secretly filming her during a trip. What started as surprise quickly turned into outrage when she discovered a series of videos the driver had taken without her consent inside the car.
In her post, the woman explained that she initially praised the driver for his hard work and even tipped him after the ride. But she now regrets it after uncovering his disturbing behavior. She claims the driver installed an extra 360-degree camera inside the car, beyond the company’s official monitoring system. She also accuses him of regularly filming female passengers and posting videos with vulgar titles to attract attention on social media. According to her, the driver’s account has over 200 videos, all secretly recording female riders.
After contacting the ride-share company’s customer service, the driver deleted the videos involving her. However, she says, “he only deleted my videos, not the others.” Still, the driver’s personal account has since been wiped clean.
This case echoes a similar scandal from about a year ago when a male TikToker sparked outrage in Vietnam by posting over 700 short clips of women in swimsuits on the beach. Claiming to “specialize in interviews” where the answers didn’t matter, he secretly filmed sensitive footage. Many women refused or tried to avoid the camera, but more than 700 clips were still uploaded, including zoomed-in shots of swimsuits taken from afar.
Regarding the ride-share driver case, the company’s customer service said, “The audio and video system in the car is installed by the platform. Drivers are not allowed to install any other recording devices on their own. Taking photos or videos of passengers violates their rights.” They added, “If the claims are verified, the employee will face strict consequences.”
It’s also reported that beyond administrative penalties, if the woman suffers serious emotional harm from this incident, both the driver and the company could be held liable for compensation.
