Married Gamer Reminisces About His First Love: Gaming

A player's heartfelt memories of climbing ranks with teammates

Hey everyone,

I’m a veteran gamer, been playing since the days when internet cafes charged 3,000 dong an hour and PCs ran hotter than rice cookers. From League of Legends to Dota and Võ Lâm, I’ve tried every game out there. But… that was before I got married.

Now here I am, sitting up past midnight after my wife and kid have gone to sleep, typing out these words on this old forum that used to feel like home in my youth. Not sure if anyone will read this, but hey, it’s a way to blow off steam and let it out before I choke up.

Thought my wife was a teammate, turns out she’s the rival

When we were dating, my wife was super cute. She’d see me gaming and just smile, saying, “Go ahead and play, I love that you have your own passion.”

Yeah, my passion was gaming, but her passion now is turning my passion into chores. After we got married, every time I fired up my PC, it was like:

“Playing again? Aren’t you going to help clean?”

“Why are you grinding events while the baby’s crying?”

“Does gaming even pay for the kid?”

At times like that, I just wish life had a pause button.

Gaming buddies aren’t as close anymore

Back in the day, 7 p.m. was prime time: squad up, fight, climb ranks. Now 7 p.m. means cooking porridge, putting the baby to sleep, or hanging laundry. My teammate Dũng jokes, “Hey, this guy’s leveled up to scared-of-his-wife mode, no more team slots for him.” It’s funny but stings a bit.

They’re still battling it out, while I’m stuck watching event notifications from afar with a heavy heart. Limited-time events, but my freedom feels even more limited.

Frustrations with no one to share

Bought a gaming mouse for 900,000 dong and hid it from my wife. At night she asked, “What’s this?” I said, “It’s a company sample…” Still got caught and nagged for three days straight.

Once she asked, “Do you choose me or the game?” I stayed silent because either choice felt impossible.

Or that time I sneaked into the bathroom for a quick match, lagged, lost, then heard a knock: “Honey, the baby’s done.” Not sure if I was mad about losing or being bossed around.

But there are moments worth it

Despite all that… every time I see my kid laughing with a full belly, or my wife holding me when I’m exhausted, I realize gaming can wait. I’m not quitting, just learning to play in “survival mode”: 30 minutes gaming, 15 minutes break, 5 minutes sneaking around.

Guys, getting married doesn’t mean the game’s over. It’s like joining a new server, harder, more challenging, but with bigger rewards: a home, kids’ laughter, and my wife’s smile every night when I come back.

Still, sometimes I miss my old crew, the thrill of double kills, the rush of climbing the ranks. If you’re single, take it slow. If you’re married, let’s share some life-gaming tips. Who knows… maybe tomorrow night I’ll sneak in one more match.

Signed,

A gamer who used to be a legend, now a level 2 husband and level 1 dad.
