A man from Zhukou, Henan, China, spent more than 500,000 yuan (over 1.8 billion VND) of his savings gifting a female streamer he was obsessed with. His family only found out after a relative spotted him on a livestream constantly sending virtual gifts.
The whole family was shocked to discover the 62-year-old had blown through all his savings of over 500,000 yuan in just three months. On top of that, he borrowed an extra 100,000 yuan (about 370 million VND) to keep “throwing money” at the screen.
During the investigation, the family found messages where the man told the streamer he was out of money. But he immediately took out loans to continue supporting her. His daughter tearfully shared, “My father spent all the money he and my mother worked so hard to save over the years. Just a few words like ‘big brother’ from girls online and the money vanished. I really can’t believe it.”
While spending so much on the streamer, the 62-year-old received a massage chair as a thank-you gift from one of the female streamers he liked. Not knowing what to do with it, he gave it to his wife, claiming it was a surprise present. In an interview, his wife insisted, “He can spend money however he wants, but the shared assets with me must be returned.”
A lawyer noted that based on a similar case ruled by China’s Supreme People’s Court in March 2025, gifting money to a female streamer without the wife’s consent, especially involving private messages and images, could be seen as violating social morals. The gifted money might be subject to repayment.
The livestream platform also commented on the case, calling it a violation of their rules. They confirmed disciplinary actions would be taken against the involved streamer. The platform added that refunding the money is possible since it is shared marital property.
In the end, the man expressed regret and apologized to his wife: “I’m sorry, dear. I promise to treat you better from now on.”
