Although the TikToker quickly posted an apology and promised to report to authorities, the incident sparked a strong warning: it’s time for everyone, especially influential KOCs and KOLs, to fully understand the legal responsibilities behind every word they say online.

What Did TikToker Cuong Tay Say That Caused Online Outrage?

The issue started during a charity livestream raising funds for people affected by natural disasters in Lai Chau province. During the stream, Cuong Tay and another participant clashed over how to transfer the donated money.

While the other side suggested sending all funds to the official account of the Vietnam Fatherland Front to ensure transparency, Cuong Tay insisted on personally delivering the money to the flood zone. The situation escalated when he used offensive, highly disrespectful language to oppose transferring the funds through the Fatherland Front.

The clip, lasting over 10 seconds and capturing this offensive moment, quickly went viral across TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube. Thousands of comments expressed anger and disappointment over his disrespect toward a reputable political and social organization, as well as the distortion of the national charity process.

Cuong Tay’s Explanation and Damage Control

After facing harsh criticism online, Cuong Tay officially posted a clarification and public apology on his personal page.

He admitted to making “inaccurate and unclear statements.” Explaining the cause, he said he blurted out the words during a heated argument with a friend named PK, combined with anxiety about fake scam pages, which led to his careless remarks.

In his statement, Cuong Tay emphasized:

The livestream was purely voluntary to support the community, with no personal gain or intent to damage the government’s reputation.

He fully agrees he was wrong to say offensive things about the Vietnam Fatherland Front.

He said that right after the argument in the clip, he accepted the plan to transfer the money to the Fatherland Front’s account if the fundraiser was successful.

He promised to proactively report and cooperate with authorities to face any legal consequences.

Cuong Tay also asked the online community not to judge his character based solely on a short clip.

Why Did Cuong Tay’s Comments Spark Such Strong Backlash?

Spreading distorted, defamatory words about an organization seriously harms the reputation of state agencies and sows doubt and division, which negatively affects relief efforts for disaster areas.

Moreover, in today’s world where information spreads in seconds, careless remarks from someone with a large following can cause unpredictable consequences, fueling baseless negative views in the community.

Responsibility Before Speaking on Social Media

Cuong Tay’s case is not unique when it comes to uncontrolled livestream comments. It serves as a costly wake-up call about obeying the law online. Social media may feel virtual, but legal responsibility is real. Cybersecurity laws clearly define violations like spreading fake news or damaging the reputation of organizations. Depending on severity, offenders can face fines or even criminal charges.

Freedom of speech must stay within legal boundaries. Everyone has the right to express opinions, but that freedom cannot infringe on others’ rights or be an excuse for insults or reckless remarks.

A warning to content creators: influence on social media comes with social responsibility. The bigger your audience, the more careful and respectful your words must be. Don’t let impulsiveness, ignorance of the law, or chasing views turn a good cause like charity into self-destruction of your reputation and career.

Cuong Tay’s willingness to admit fault and cooperate with authorities is the right attitude after a mistake. Still, legal punishment and public backlash will be a hard lesson for him and anyone active online today.
