Game adaptations have become a goldmine for filmmakers in recent years, and Netflix is definitely in on the action. After announcing a series based on Assassin’s Creed, insider sources say Netflix is cooking up an even bigger project: The Elder Scrolls, one of the biggest RPG franchises worldwide that every gamer knows.
Even though the latest main entry, Skyrim, came out back in 2011 from Bethesda Softworks, The Elder Scrolls remains super popular in the global gaming community. Spin-offs like the MMO The Elder Scrolls Online and mobile title The Elder Scrolls: Blades have also been warmly received, keeping the franchise strong to this day.
While The Elder Scrolls VI is still in development with no release date, Netflix seems eager to bring new life to the franchise with a fresh TV series. According to insider Daniel Richtman, Netflix is taking The Elder Scrolls seriously and plans to handle it with the same high-quality, large-scale approach they used for The Witcher. Although The Witcher series is mostly based on the novels, Netflix’s experience with fantasy adaptations will definitely help when they dive into The Elder Scrolls world.
This is a bold but unsurprising move from Netflix, especially after the massive success of The Witcher and fantasy adaptations in general. The continent of Tamriel in The Elder Scrolls is huge, with a rich history spanning centuries each time Bethesda releases a new game.
There are so many angles and stories Netflix could explore, like the shadowy assassin group Dark Brotherhood, or guilds with a martial arts vibe such as the Thieves Guild (The Elder Scrolls’ version of a “Cái Bang”) and Fighters Guild.
The Elder Scrolls offers a vast fantasy world with plenty of material for Netflix’s new series.
Unlike The Witcher, The Elder Scrolls focuses on player freedom rather than following a fixed main character like Geralt of Rivia. So Netflix will likely create a brand-new cast and original storylines not seen in the games. This gives them more creative freedom and the chance to surprise viewers.
Netflix hasn’t officially announced this yet. Meanwhile, earlier this year Bethesda gave the green light to Amazon Prime for a Fallout adaptation, another huge franchise they own. The team behind the hit series Westworld is involved in that project. With Fallout heading to TV, it makes no sense for Bethesda or Netflix to shelve their prized Elder Scrolls franchise.
