Scientists Think Black Holes Could Be Gateways Through Space and Time

Astrophysicists suggest some supermassive black holes might act as wormholes linking distant parts of the universe.

In his theory of general relativity, Albert Einstein predicted the existence of wormholes, which could connect two points in space or time. However, so far, we have yet to find any evidence proving these wormholes actually exist.

Recently, experts from the Central Astronomical Observatory in Russia proposed that the ‘black holes’ at the centers of some very bright galaxies (known as active galactic nuclei or AGN) might be entrances to these wormholes. This study was just published in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Society.

Active galactic nuclei, or AGN, are dense central regions of galaxies caused by the accumulation of supermassive black holes at their cores.

Basically, wormholes and black holes are very similar. Both are incredibly dense and have extremely strong gravity. But there are some key differences. For example, nothing can escape a black hole once it crosses its event horizon, while theoretically, anything entering one mouth of a wormhole could reappear from the other mouth somewhere else in the universe.

Researchers suggest that matter entering one mouth of a wormhole might collide with matter entering the other mouth at the same time. This collision would create plasma spheres with temperatures around 18 trillion degrees Fahrenheit, shooting out of both wormhole mouths at the speed of light.

At such temperatures, this plasma would also emit gamma rays with energies of 68 million electronvolts, allowing some NASA observatories, like the Fermi Space Telescope, to detect the explosion. The researchers also suggest that if they find something like an AGN emitting high-energy spherical gamma rays, it might not actually be an AGN but rather a wormhole entrance.

“We currently know very little about the internal structure of wormholes. We don’t even know for sure if they exist,” said study author Mikhail Piotrovich in an interview with Motherboard.

AGN are the most powerful sources of radiation in the universe, shining as brightly as billions of stars combined from a region about the size of our solar system.

If humans could travel to the cores of these distant galaxies, we might discover a new way to move through the universe, or even a method for time travel. However, it’s important to note that the nearest AGN is about 13 million light-years away. So, reaching these AGN, or using wormholes for space travel, is currently impossible with our technology.

Also, while these wormholes are theoretically passable (meaning a spaceship could travel through them), they are surrounded by extremely intense radiation. This means surviving a journey through a wormhole would be incredibly difficult, even with the most advanced protective measures.
