FPS games, or first-person shooters, have been one of the most popular and successful game genres ever. Originally, these games focused mainly on single-player campaigns, but with the rise of the internet, multiplayer modes gradually took center stage.

Despite that shift, gamers still get hyped about FPS titles with standout single-player experiences. In part 1, we covered games like Titanfall 2 and Wolfenstein: The New Order. Now, let’s continue exploring the top 10 FPS games that defined the single-player mode and shaped the genre!

DOOM (2016)

Doom is a legendary name in FPS gaming. The series started to fade around Doom 3 (2004), just as the genre was evolving. The developers faced the challenge of making Doom relevant again. Ultimately, id Software decided to return to its “old-school” roots.

Doom (2016) ditched the military-style shooting common in FPS games. Instead of regenerating health or hiding behind cover, players must keep moving to dodge bullets and aggressively take down demons. Every battle is pumped up with a rocking soundtrack that amps up the excitement and adrenaline.

Rather than focusing on story, this Doom puts all its energy into fast-paced, intense combat. The result is an FPS campaign that makes you feel like a relentless demon slayer. It’s not just a spectacular single-player game, but also a highly successful reboot.

Bioshock

Bioshock (2007) is seen as the spiritual successor to System Shock and quickly became one of the most beloved games of 2007. Set in the 1960s, you play as Jack, who survives a plane crash and discovers the underwater city of Rapture. What starts as an adventure soon turns into a nightmare.

You’ll face mutated enemies roaming the halls and giant “Big Daddy” creatures harvesting a substance called Adam from eerie little girls. What sets this game apart is its deep customization system, letting you tailor your powers and playstyle.

You can use plasmids to unleash lightning or fire attacks, or even hack into enemies’ minds to control the battlefield. The story unfolds with intriguing twists that keep you hooked, while the detailed environment creates an immersive atmosphere from the moment you enter Rapture. Even today, Bioshock remains a masterpiece.

Half-Life 2

Half-Life 2 is a classic everyone knows. Following the legendary Half-Life in 1998, Valve hit another home run with Half-Life 2 (2004). This sequel improved facial expressions, physics mechanics, and delivered a seamless story. You control the main character throughout, with no cutscenes interrupting the gameplay.

Set 20 years after the original, Gordon Freeman wakes up in a bleak world controlled by the alien Combine. Wearing his HEV suit, he teams up with Alyx Vance to fight back. Missions take you from the city center to the coastline and back as the resistance grows stronger.

Half-Life 2 is nearly perfect. Its expansions only cemented its legendary status in FPS and gaming history.

Halo 3

Halo 3 was one of the biggest hits of 2007, eagerly awaited by fans and delivered by Bungie. With the tagline “Finish The Fight,” it wraps up the series’ story arc.

Master Chief faces off against the Covenant and Flood for the final time across nine challenging and thrilling missions. Players loved the new weapons, tough enemies, and finely tuned AI. Every interaction between enemies, vehicles, allies, weapons, and gear was carefully crafted. This attention to detail is why fans adore Halo.

Halo 3 showcases Bungie’s brilliance. While the first game had some dull moments and the second was short with a weak ending, the third perfectly balances combat and a satisfying conclusion.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

After exploring historical settings, Call of Duty finally moved to modern warfare with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. You follow a squad hunting down Middle Eastern dictator Al-Asad and Russian warlord Zakhaev.

The campaign is a nonstop rollercoaster of intense action scenes. What makes this game special is its core philosophy: no soldier fights alone.

The single-player mode switches between Soap MacTavish, the SAS strategist, and Sergeant Paul Jackson, who leads direct, high-stakes assaults. This alternating perspective creates a fantastic pacing.

Overall, Call of Duty 4’s single-player campaign made a huge impact, elevating the series and setting a standard for future FPS campaigns.
