Achenar – Myst IV: Revelation
In Myst, Achenar is cruel and cunning, enjoying torture and creating dangerous twisted “toys.” Alongside his brother Sirius, he plotted to imprison their father and steal his wealth. When things go south in Myst IV and their sister Yeesha is kidnapped, these two become prime suspects.
Achenar tries to prove his innocence, but with stolen artifacts in hand and his strange demeanor, no one believes him. This time, though, he’s telling the truth.
Sirius has taken control of Yeesha’s mind and plans to do the same to their father. Players must enter Yeesha’s mind to free her, and when they return, they find Achenar dying heroically after sacrificing himself to save both when the ceiling collapses. His brave death moves their father to love his daughter more.
Dr. Judith Mossman – Half-Life 2
Mossman is a serious but approachable member of the Resistance fighting the Combine. She’s friendly and excited when Gordon Freeman returns, so players want to rescue her when she’s kidnapped. But then it’s revealed she was behind the Black Mesa attack.
Despite this, Mossman knows the damage she caused, so she fakes a second betrayal. She acts cruel to deliver a surprise blow that helps the Resistance win. Through this, she redeems herself and earns her place as a true hero.
Galen Marek – Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
As Darth Vader’s secret apprentice, Galen Marek gets caught in a plot to assassinate the Emperor. Most players would be suspicious of Vader’s plan, but Marek blindly trusts him and ends up betrayed. This betrayal opens Marek’s eyes to Vader’s true intentions: using him as a tool against the Rebel Alliance.
After being saved, Marek is furious and joins forces with Juno Eclipse and the Rebels. In a battle against Palpatine, Marek sacrifices himself by unleashing a massive force wave that destroys stormtroopers and the area. This heroic act turns him from villain to true hero.
Beatrix, Final Fantasy IX
At first, Beatrix is a proud, elite warrior and a terrifying foe. She’s willing to sacrifice herself to protect Alexandria’s people, queen, and princess. She repeatedly defeats heroes and leads a ruthless conquest of Bermecia, personally retrieving artifacts for the queen’s plan to control the Mist Continent.
But when Beatrix learns the queen plans to kill the princess, she chooses to do one thing her honor allows: fight the tyrant and save the princess. She joins the heroes to stop the evil queen and fix the damage she caused.
Poison Ivy – Batman: Arkham Knight
Poison Ivy is one of Batman’s most dangerous and seductive enemies. She controls plants, can manipulate minds, and can kill with a light touch. In the game, Scarecrow plans to kill Batman by releasing toxic gas across Gotham. Ivy doesn’t mind Batman dying but opposes killing all the city’s plants with the gas. That’s why Batman finds Ivy imprisoned early on.
Ivy agrees to help Batman by showing him how to destroy the gas using a giant tree’s roots beneath Gotham. Together, they fight through hundreds of Arkham Knight’s soldiers underground to awaken the tree.
But even after this, the tree isn’t strong enough to clear all the gas. Ivy pours all her power into it, sacrificing herself to help Batman one last time.
Villain sacrifices are rare in comics, but Ivy’s love for plants makes her a true hero. Even Batman respects her noble act.
