Resident Evil is definitely one of the most legendary horror game franchises out there. The first game dropped back in 1996 and made a huge impact on the gaming world. If you grew up in the 80s, 90s, or even early 2000s, you probably know it well.
When Resident Evil Village launched in May 2021, the series blew up again. Most of the praise went to the remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 3, which perfectly balanced gore, horror, and action, the core elements that made the series famous. So now feels like the perfect time to look back at 10 standout Resident Evil games that deserve a remaster or remake from Capcom.
Resident Evil Outbreak Series
Back then, no one was sure if online multiplayer would take off, so Capcom took a gamble with Raccoon City. Both Outbreak and its sequel File #2 featured familiar characters, each with unique skills to survive the night. You could team up with other players online, but since it was on the PS2, the online experience wasn’t great.
Nowadays, online gaming is everywhere, so this would be a great time to revive this title. Resident Evil Outbreak stood out for its survival and tactical gameplay.
There’s a virus meter on the screen that gradually fills up. If it hits 100% during single-player, the level ends. In online mode, you turn into a zombie. The meter rises over time or when attacked, but herbs and medicine lower it. It’s a cool mechanic that could be improved or added to current games to increase the challenge. Oh, and there’s even a zombie elephant in the game.
Resident Evil Survivor Series
It’s fair to say this is one of the worst Resident Evil games, and its sequel wasn’t much better. But Capcom has shown it can make fun shooters like Resident Evil: Dead Aim and Resident Evil: Chronicles. If they remastered all these and bundled them together, it would be a perfect fit for the Nintendo Switch.
This would also be a great chance to fix the story, which originally didn’t connect well with the main series and added little to the overall plot. A safe bet would be to use characters like Ada to fill in gaps, like what Chris Redfield was up to between the first game and Code Veronica. Honestly, anything would be better because Capcom can’t really mess this series up any further.
Resident Evil: The Mercenaries
This game is already 10 years old. It was made for the Nintendo 3DS and expanded on the popular Mercenaries mode from Resident Evil 4, turning it into a standalone game. When it came out, Mercenaries mode was almost as popular as the main game, so it’s strange it didn’t appear in later titles.
However, The Mercenaries wasn’t perfect. It felt like a demo testing the 3DS hardware. There were few levels and limited modes, plus you couldn’t replay from the start to prevent reselling. This makes it a prime candidate for a remake with more levels, weapons, costumes, and characters. Each character could have unique skills and strengths. It’s also a chance for Capcom to add fresh, rare ideas you don’t usually see in main games.
Resident Evil, Code: Veronica
This was a breakthrough in graphics for Resident Evil, featuring fully 3D environments. But it still used fixed camera angles, which frustrated many players. This game reunited the Redfield siblings, but the story was a bit dull.
The atmosphere is dark and claustrophobic, set on a mysterious island prison with labs and fancy mansions. New monsters like the Bandersnatch were a cool addition, and a remake could make everything even more realistic and immersive.
But the game has some flaws. If you don’t manage your ammo and items carefully, you’ll have to replay checkpoints. Also, the character Steve could use a redesign since following Claire all the time feels a bit off.
Resident Evil 0
Resident Evil 0 is surprisingly good. As the name suggests, it’s a prequel to the original game and uses fixed camera angles like the 2002 Resident Evil remake. You control Rebecca Chambers, the last surviving member of the Alpha Team from the first game, and Billy Coen, a character most people barely remember.
The game has a unique co-op mechanic where you switch between the two characters. Items can only be shared between them, no more item boxes like before. This can be a bit annoying, and many players prefer the old system.
The story and characters aren’t very polished, and the new enemies aren’t particularly memorable. Still, Resident Evil 0 has some standout moments, like the opening train sequence. The graphics are solid, so it mostly just needs some quality improvements and a few interesting new enemies.
