When playing online games, you can always run into cheaters who rely on hacks instead of skill. The Anti-Cheat Police Department (@AntiCheatPD) shared a Call of Duty gameplay video showing a new cheating method that uses machine learning. This system uses a PC and a capture card to record gameplay footage for the algorithm to learn from.
Players still need to control their characters, but the algorithm automatically adjusts aiming to ensure hits. AntiCheatPD describes the algorithm as a supercharged “aim-assist” that requires nothing from the player besides loosely aiming while the system shoots for them.
The headache for developers is that this system is hard to detect because a real player is still controlling the character, but their reflexes match top-level pros. So how do you tell who’s cheating and who’s genuinely skilled? Only time will tell if there’s a weakness that can expose this system.
It’s unclear how input delay affects this new cheat method. The gameplay video has to pass through the capture card before the algorithm processes it and sends signals to the controller input, which could add a few milliseconds of lag. But if it works well enough, even console games won’t be safe. Since consoles can easily connect to PCs via capture cards, this risk impacts all platforms.
