On the morning of October 11 (Vietnam time), just before the first matches of the 2021 Worlds Main Event group stage kicked off, all teams were ready and in top form. But for Fnatic and their player Upset, things didn’t go as planned. Right before these crucial group stage matches, Fnatic announced that Upset would be out due to a “serious family issue” until the end of the group stage at Worlds.
This was really disappointing news not only for Fnatic fans and the European LoL community but for the entire League of Legends scene. Upset is known as a highly skilled player with incredible determination every time he steps onto the Rift. Yet, despite five years of pro play, he has never once made it to Worlds.
However, while most people expressed concern and wished Upset well in handling his family situation, Gen.G Esports streamer Nemesis raised doubts, even mocking the “serious family issue” explanation from Fnatic. According to Nemesis, there must be some other problem between Upset and Fnatic, and the family issue is just a cover-up.
But instead of support, many LoL forums and communities called Nemesis petty and vindictive. They said he was projecting his dislike for his old team onto Upset, even though Nemesis and Upset never had any personal issues, and Nemesis actually left Fnatic long before Upset joined.
On top of that, as mentioned, Upset is known for his strong will and would never skip important matches, especially since he’s never had a chance to play at Worlds. In the past, even when sick, Upset pushed himself to compete. So many argued that unless it was a truly serious issue, Upset wouldn’t just drop out like this.
Even Veteran, a streamer from Fnatic, spoke out against Nemesis’s comments.
At the end of the day, whatever the real reason for Upset’s absence, it’s a private matter between him and Fnatic. Opinions should be taken lightly, and public figures like Nemesis need to be more careful with their words to avoid harming unrelated individuals and organizations.
