Most RPGs have you build your own team to fight evil plots or join epic battles to protect your homeland. But some games take a different route, focusing more on humor and guaranteed laughs. Here are the top 6 funniest RPGs ever made.

Undertale

Toby Fox made a huge impact with Undertale, a 2D RPG packed with humor that he mostly developed himself. You play as Frisk, a child who falls into the Underground, a world full of quirky monsters.

Beyond its charming retro art style, the game is praised for its storytelling and how it weaves humor into the narrative. The funny moments mostly come from conversations between you and the monsters you meet. Many monsters let you choose to fight or befriend them, and these choices often trigger witty jokes based on the situation.

Paper Mario

After the success of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Nintendo gave the RPG genre another shot on the Nintendo 64 with Paper Mario. This time, Intelligent Systems (instead of Square) developed the game.

True to its name, characters are designed like folded paper figures. It sounds quirky, but this unique style helped define the series. What really makes Paper Mario memorable, though, is its humor, which keeps players entertained to this day.

South Park: The Stick Of Truth

Playing South Park: The Stick of Truth guarantees nonstop laughter. Inspired by the famous South Park animated series, which itself is a comedy goldmine, the game takes the humor to the next level.

The RPG blends the show’s signature humor with clever parodies of typical game tropes, creating hilarious moments throughout. Plus, the gameplay is solid, offering a fantastic experience as you dive into the world of South Park.

Earthbound

Earthbound is often one of the first names mentioned when talking about classic RPGs. It stands out by skillfully adding humor to its story, making the plot more engaging and optimistic. Unlike traditional RPGs, Earthbound is set in a contemporary world.

You play as Ness, a young boy who discovers a meteorite containing an alien monster named Giygas, who’s destroying Ness’s hometown. Ness teams up with friends Poo, Jeff, and Paula to visit eight Sanctuaries and collect Sound Stones to stop Giygas’s plan.

DeathSpank

Created by Clayton Kauzlaric and Ron Gilbert, the latter famous for Monkey Island, DeathSpank is a humorous RPG released in 2010 on PC, Mac OS X, PS3, and Xbox 360.

DeathSpank gameplay

Set in a medieval fantasy world, you play as a famous hero on a quest to find mysterious objects called The Artifact. You travel through various towns and villages, helping locals to earn rewards and better gear. After the first game’s success, two sequels followed: DeathSpank: Thongs of Virtue and DeathSpank: The Baconing.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story

The Mario & Luigi series is known for its humor and fun vibes. Among its five main entries, Bowser’s Inside Story, released on Nintendo DS in 2009, is considered the best. What makes it special is that besides Mario and Luigi, you also get to play as Bowser.
