Jared Birchall is considered one of the most important figures behind Elon Musk’s success, managing the billionaire’s network of relationships. He’s known as Musk’s “butler,” running the family office Excession. This company handles everything from arranging loans, hiring security, buying and selling homes, to managing Musk’s wild and controversial ideas.
Elon Musk’s Trusted Right-Hand Man
A Brigham Young University graduate, Birchall started his career at Goldman Sachs in 1999 as a financial analyst, according to LinkedIn. He then joined Merrill Lynch in Los Angeles, working there for about a decade as a wealth manager.
However, Merrill Lynch fired Birchall in 2010 for “conduct leading to loss of management trust,” including “sending letters to clients without management approval.” Less than a month later, he landed a wealth management role at Morgan Stanley.

Birchall, a former Morgan Stanley banker, has run Musk’s family office for six years and is known as the man behind the Tesla billionaire’s spotlight. He helped Musk secure $46.5 billion to prepare for the Twitter takeover plan.
Unlike his flashy boss, Birchall is seen as a quiet and steady operator. Raphael Amit, a management professor at Wharton, says Birchall’s multiple roles, including running the family office, show Elon Musk’s deep trust in him.
The Butler and Musk’s Key Ally
Birchall started working with Musk about 10 years ago when he was a client advisor at Morgan Stanley in Southern California. He helped Musk arrange hundreds of millions in loans from investment banks when cash was tight. The Wall Street Journal reported that Musk later hired Birchall directly.
Jared Birchall is one of the most influential people in Elon Musk’s business empire. He’s the director of the family office that manages most of Musk’s wealth.
Besides key roles at The Boring Company and Neuralink, Musk’s “right-hand man” also sits on the board of the Musk Foundation and other important organizations.
Birchall takes on more complex duties than a typical family office manager, like building strong relationships with major banks Musk borrows from. This strategy helped Musk grow richer by borrowing to fund new ventures instead of selling Tesla shares.

He arranged a $12.5 billion loan for the South African billionaire by using Musk’s Tesla shares as collateral. This deal boosted Musk’s status but also brought public attention to Birchall.
Birchall also manages Musk’s schedule, handling everything from organizing transportation to the plane, overseeing various business projects, hiring nannies for the kids, and arranging security.
According to the New York Post, Birchall’s salary ranges from $1 million to $3 million, but it could be much higher depending on his responsibilities, especially if he directly selects stocks or hedge funds for investment.
A Relationship Beyond Work
Birchall’s duties go far beyond managing Musk’s business assets. He’s also involved in protecting the Tesla billionaire’s image during controversies.
He wasn’t just in charge of major loans to secure the Twitter deal (currently on hold), but also supported Musk in the smallest tasks.
In 2018, Musk was sued by British cave diver Vernon Unsworth over a defamatory tweet. The tweet came after Unsworth criticized Musk’s rescue efforts for the 13 boys trapped in Thailand’s Tham Luang cave.

Birchall was directly involved in this lawsuit. When asked to testify, he told the court he had a “protective instinct” toward Musk. Ultimately, Musk won the case.
Tayyab Mohamed, co-founder of Agreus Group, which manages family offices for billionaires, calls Birchall and Musk a “perfect pair.”
“If you don’t fit culturally or click with the workplace, you won’t last long. I’m sure Jared is great at what he does, but more importantly, he’s a perfect fit for Elon Musk,” Mohamed said.
