Born in 1983 in Arizona, USA, Jessica Cox is one of the few female pilots there. But what really makes her stand out is that she’s the world’s first pilot without arms.

As a child, she learned to use her feet instead of hands. Jessica describes herself as a “smart kid” who was only frustrated because she couldn’t understand why she didn’t have arms while her brother, sister, and parents did.

Jessica was born with a congenital disability, missing both arms.

Growing up, Jessica used prosthetic arms after countless hours of therapy following school. Although prosthetics made some tasks easier, she never felt connected to them and preferred to do everything with her feet.

After 11 years of wearing prosthetics, Jessica decided to stop using them and rely on her feet, which made her unique. This marked a new chapter in her life.

During school breaks, Jessica often felt limited because people around her were overprotective and wouldn’t let her climb on playground equipment. Whenever she felt angry or frustrated, she would sit on a swing and dream of flying.

She loved the swing because it was something she could control, imagining herself soaring above everything. This sparked her determination to become a pilot. Jessica knew that if she could fly a plane, she would have her own freedom and literally soar above everyone else.

Jessica started Taekwondo at age 10 and quickly advanced, earning her black belt by 14. Her passion for Taekwondo led her to meet Patrick, a Taekwondo instructor. They married in 2012. Since then, Patrick has been a strong support for Jessica on her travels and adventures.

“I can dress myself, eat on my own, drive a car, participate in sports and martial arts, run my own business, and enjoy a wonderful marriage with my husband,” she proudly shares.

Jessica’s journey to becoming a pilot began after she spoke at a nonprofit organization, which gave her the chance to join a flight with them. But before that flight, she got her first taste of piloting during a trip to Mexico on a small single-engine plane, where she got to hold the controls and experience flying firsthand.

That feeling of control, freedom, and strength in the air inspired her to promise herself she would pursue her dream of becoming a pilot.

However, it wasn’t without challenges. At first, she struggled to find an instructor. Many people felt uncomfortable teaching a pilot without arms. But Jessica persisted and eventually found the right mentor.

After three years of training, Jessica’s dream came true in 2008 when she completed her first solo flight. She earned her pilot’s license and became the first woman to fly a plane using her feet.

Jessica is not only a pilot but also a passionate advocate for people with disabilities. As a motivational speaker, she travels worldwide to inspire others.

She champions the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and supports the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), which ensures access to education, healthcare, and opportunities similar to what she experienced growing up. She has become a goodwill ambassador for humanity and inclusion, traveling across Europe, Africa, and Australia.
