According to tech site MacRumors, the 5W iPhone charger, a staple accessory included with iPhones up to 2019, is now running out of stock at many Apple Stores worldwide.
This familiar charger is now listed as out of stock on Apple’s official websites in countries like Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, New Zealand, China, and Japan. However, it remains available in the US, Canada, Brazil, the UK, and some other regions.
Apple’s 5W USB charger was an essential part of almost every iPhone box from the original iPhone 2G through the iPhone 11. It was also included with Apple Watch models up to Series 5.
But in 2020, with the launch of the iPhone 12 series and Apple Watch Series 6, Apple stopped including this charger as a free accessory to help protect the environment. Customers can still buy it separately if they want.
On its online store, Apple describes the 5W charger like this: “With its ultra-compact design, this charger delivers fast, efficient charging at home, in the office, or on the go. It works with any iPhone, iPad mini, or iPod model.”
Also in 2020, Apple introduced a new 20W USB-C fast charger that can quickly charge iPhones, Apple Watches, and iPads. This newer charger also supports the HomePod smart speaker and MagSafe charger. Apple currently sells the 20W USB-C charger for $19, the same price as the old 5W charger.
According to multiple suppliers, Apple has no plans to keep producing the classic 5W charger. So it’s likely only a matter of time before this accessory disappears completely from Apple Stores worldwide.
