Shocking Crime Case
According to the Ulsan District Prosecutor’s Office, a teenage girl known as A and her boyfriend B have been formally charged without bail for robbery and computer fraud. A’s younger brother, who was also involved in the scheme, has been referred to the juvenile court on similar charges.
This disturbing incident took place in 2024. Court records reveal that to fund their personal expenses, A, her brother, and B devised a cruel and cunning plan targeting their 40-year-old father.
The teens crushed prescribed sleeping pills into a fine powder, then secretly mixed it into their father’s coffee.
After drinking the drug-laced coffee, their father quickly fell into a deep coma, losing all awareness and ability to resist. Taking advantage of this, the siblings and B began rifling through his belongings and stole his mobile phone.
Using the phone and his personal information, they took out online loans totaling about 30 million won (around 530 million VND) without face-to-face contact. They didn’t stop there, they also accessed his bank accounts and withdrew an additional 703 million VND.
To avoid detection by authorities, after stealing roughly 70 million won, they used the money to buy large amounts of gold bars, which they then sold at jewelry stores to get cash for easy spending.
What outraged the public even more was how they spent the stolen money.
Instead of using it for urgent or necessary needs, the teens blew tens of millions of won on luxury and frivolous services.
Investigators revealed that all the cash from selling the gold was split among A and her accomplices to spend on high-end skincare, shopping, and wild partying. Their cold-hearted selfishness toward their hardworking father sparked a wave of public outrage across South Korea.
The crime only came to light when the father woke up from the drug-induced coma. Finding his children missing along with his phone and valuables, he initially thought they had been kidnapped or gone missing and quickly reported it to the police.
Police launched a search and located A and B within a day. However, during the initial investigation, a clever lie was crafted to cover up the siblings’ crime.
At the police station, B cracked under pressure and confessed that A masterminded the plan to drug their father’s coffee. A vehemently denied involvement, crying and insisting she had nothing to do with it. Even A’s brother defended her, telling police, “My sister was not involved.” Due to lack of direct evidence and conflicting statements, police initially only charged B with computer fraud, letting A and her brother off temporarily.
Determined not to let the culprits escape justice, the Ulsan Prosecutor’s Office reopened the case and launched a thorough reinvestigation in November last year.
Under sharp questioning, all three suspects were brought together for a joint interrogation. The psychological defenses of A and her brother completely collapsed. Faced with solid evidence and tough questioning, the siblings admitted, “We crushed the prescribed sleeping pills into powder, mixed it into our father’s coffee, and gave it to him so he would fall asleep.”
Prosecutors confirmed that A’s actions went beyond simple family theft and qualified as robbery. By deliberately drugging their father to render him helpless and then stealing his phone to take out loans, A and B face severe legal penalties.
The trial of A and her accomplices is drawing intense public attention. This case will surely result in a harsh sentence for those who betrayed their family and broke the law so callously.
